School of Medicine: Wisdom of Practice - IN PERSON

Sponsored by: School of Medicine

Becoming the kind of clinician you want to be: Meeting patient, practitioner, and community needs through private practice innovation. The third annual Wisdom of Practice Lecture will be delivered this year by Dr Johanna Lynch, an Australian family doctor who used the platform of private practice to respond to the needs of her patients, the wider community, her own family, and herself. Johanna will take us on a journey through the various iterations of her clinical practice and research and inspire us to remember what we value and why we did medicine. She will use her own journey to reflect on the personal struggle each patient-oriented clinician encounters as they seek to remain relational and personalized in the care they offer within fragmented systems. She will inspire us all, in Bradley Lewis’s words, to develop “better, truer, richer, and more generous stories and case formulations in the service of healing and coping.

CWRU Art & Sculpture Tour (Thursday)

Sponsored by: The Alumni Association

Join us for an outdoor walking tour of CWRU's Putnam Sculpture Collection, led by the Putnam Art Collection curators. Thanks to the generous support of John and Mildred Putnam, Case Western Reserve University has commissioned and installed works of art across campus since the 1980s. Discover the stories behind these remarkable works as we revisit longtime favorites and explore the collection's newest additions.

This 90-minute tour is primarily outdoors and will take place rain or shine. Be prepared for plenty of walking, and we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing so you can fully enjoy the experience.

School of Dental Medicine presents Martin Nweeia, DMD (DEN '84): Narwhal - A Tusk with a Twist

Martin T. Nweeia, DMD’84 is the world’s leading expert on the iconic narwhal tusk, discovering its amazing sensory abilities. Featured with a front-page story in the New York Times, an exhibit and award-winning book from the Smithsonian, and in over 10 documentaries from National Geographic, BBC, and Discovery, his work marks 18 High Arctic expeditions that were highlighted from the National Science Foundation to the US Congress as “a model for future scientists to utilize as they seek to better understand our world.” Dr. Nweeia is a Harvard/Smithsonian scientist, Fulbright-Hayes scholar, and assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. After the lecture concludes, stay for a virtual reality visit with the Narwahl whale and enjoy other museum exhibits as well as cocktails and appetizers.

Poor Clare by Chiara Atik

Sponsored by: Department of Theater

CWRU Dept. of Theater Presents: Poor Clare by Chiara Atik
Directed by Carrie Williams
Winner!  2022 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award

Oct. 9th, 10th at 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Oct. 11th at 3 p.m.- 5 p.m.

Kalberer Theatre at Maltz Performing Arts Center

It’s 1211 in Assisi, Italy, and Clare’s got beauty, wealth, and a rich suitor who showers her with expensive presents. So why is she so drawn to this guy Francis who gave up all his possessions just because poor people are suffering? Everyone in town says he’s crazy. And yet… she starts seeing everything in her life differently. This hilarious, anachronistic telling of the real story of St. Clare considers the cost of doing good– and how little has changed for the haves and the have-nots in almost a millennium.

CWRU Pride LGBT Outstanding Alumni Award Reception

Sponsored by: CWRU PRIDE Affinity Network

Join us in celebrating the 2026 CWRU Pride LGBT Outstanding Alumni recipient, Maya Simek (SAS '07)!

Read on to learn more about Maya's distinguished journey.

--

Maya Simek is an accomplished legal professional, social worker, LGBTQ+ advocate, and entrepreneur. She has established two highly successful social justice legal clinics dedicated to serving the LGBTQ+ community. As a faculty member at both Cleveland State University (CSU) Law and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), she cultivates the next generation of social justice lawyers. Despite her profound commitment to advocacy and program development, her contributions may not be fully recognized by prominent institutions, including her alma mater, CWRU.

A graduate of CWRU's Mandel School of Social Work, Ms. Simek earned her Master of Social Work (MSW) in conjunction with a Juris Doctor (JD) from CSU Law (2010). This dual expertise stemmed from her recognition that clients, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals, required an integrated approach to legal and social work support, allowing her to pioneer the practice of trauma-informed legal representation.

Subsequent to her graduation, Maya founded the thriving Nueva Luz Legal Clinic. Her experience there led to her being recruited to establish Equality Ohio's Legal Clinic, where she served as Legal Director from 2019 to 2025. This clinic is one of only two such state-level legal services affiliated with an LGBTQ+ equality organization in the United States, and it consistently maintains a substantial waitlist due to significant demand.

Concurrently, Maya has served on the Faculty at CWRU as the Co-Director of the Human Trafficking Project within the Milton and Charlotte Kramer Law Clinic, following a previous tenure at CSU's Legal Clinic. She provides compassionate and competent legal representation to hundreds of human trafficking victims navigating a complex system. Her direct engagement in clinical education has inspired numerous students to develop into exemplary legal practitioners. In recognition of her achievements, Maya was honored as one of Cleveland Crain's "Forty Under Forty" in 2020. We are proud to recognize her as the 2026 CWRU Pride LGBT Outstanding Alumni recipient!

First Generation Breakfast

Sponsored by: The Alumni Association

The Alumni Association of CWRU and student org, First CWRU, welcome first generation parents and alumni to a breakfast event during Homecoming weekend. Meet fellow alumni and connect with students, as well as alumni board members and Emerti board members.

This event has a cost of $8, all of which will go towards the First CWRU student organization's operating fund.

Simply put, being first-generation means that you are the first in your family to attend college... To narrow this definition a little, people are considered first-generation college students when their parents have received none to some college education (meaning earned an associate's degree or less) and/or their parent received a college education outside of the US.
