CWRU Pride LGBT Outstanding Alumni Award Reception
Join us in celebrating the 2026 CWRU Pride LGBT Outstanding Alumni recipient, Maya Simek (SAS '07)!
Read on to learn more about Maya's distinguished journey.
--
Maya Simek is an accomplished legal professional, social worker, LGBTQ+ advocate, and entrepreneur. She has established two highly successful social justice legal clinics dedicated to serving the LGBTQ+ community. As a faculty member at both Cleveland State University (CSU) Law and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), she cultivates the next generation of social justice lawyers. Despite her profound commitment to advocacy and program development, her contributions may not be fully recognized by prominent institutions, including her alma mater, CWRU.
A graduate of CWRU's Mandel School of Social Work, Ms. Simek earned her Master of Social Work (MSW) in conjunction with a Juris Doctor (JD) from CSU Law (2010). This dual expertise stemmed from her recognition that clients, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals, required an integrated approach to legal and social work support, allowing her to pioneer the practice of trauma-informed legal representation.
Subsequent to her graduation, Maya founded the thriving Nueva Luz Legal Clinic. Her experience there led to her being recruited to establish Equality Ohio's Legal Clinic, where she served as Legal Director from 2019 to 2025. This clinic is one of only two such state-level legal services affiliated with an LGBTQ+ equality organization in the United States, and it consistently maintains a substantial waitlist due to significant demand.
Concurrently, Maya has served on the Faculty at CWRU as the Co-Director of the Human Trafficking Project within the Milton and Charlotte Kramer Law Clinic, following a previous tenure at CSU's Legal Clinic. She provides compassionate and competent legal representation to hundreds of human trafficking victims navigating a complex system. Her direct engagement in clinical education has inspired numerous students to develop into exemplary legal practitioners. In recognition of her achievements, Maya was honored as one of Cleveland Crain's "Forty Under Forty" in 2020. We are proud to recognize her as the 2026 CWRU Pride LGBT Outstanding Alumni recipient!
