"Mission UnACCOMPLISHED": Optimal Antihypertensive Therapy
Lawrence J. Kanter, MD (MED '70) Lecture There is robust evidence that initial single pill combination therapy for hypertension is the best approach for achieving blood pressure control. However, the optimal combination medical regimen to prevent cardiovascular events has been a topic largely ignored for over a decade due to a singular focus on controlling blood pressure. I present evidence that beginning treatment with combination renin angiotensin system blockade plus a calcium channel blocker should be fist line for most patients with hypertension and that guidelines should reconsider the current agnostic approach to recommending specific antihypertensive agents.
